Mosaic facade of the Kings' Hall Lorsch
Location
Lorsch, Germany
Project type
Oil painting
Date
2001
The facade decoration of the famous King's Hall has remained almost unchanged for over a millennium. The Roman masonry technique looks beautiful and playful in combination with the contrasting color and shape of the natural sandstone building blocks.
The King's Hall is considered one of the most important and best-preserved relics of pre-Romanesque architecture in Germany and, with its arcades, pilasters and half-columns, is known as the "jewel of the Carolingian Renaissance".
The King's Hall is a reminder of the past greatness of the once mighty Benedictine abbey.
